Lava flows resulting from the eruption reached approximately 2 kilometers down the mountain’s southwestern slope.
Authorities warned local residents and visitors not to approach Mount Merapi. Indonesia, located within the "Pacific Ring of Fire" seismic and volcanic belt, is home to 130 active volcanoes.
According to a statement by the Center for Research and Development of Geological Disaster Technologies (BPPTKG), the eruption lasted approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds, and warnings were issued under the third-highest alert level of the country’s four-tier volcanic alert system.
Authorities are warning tourists and citizens to stay away from the danger zone. Emphasizing that lava flows could spread over a wider area than expected due to riverbeds on and around the mountain, officials urged the public to follow official announcements.
