A deadly fire at a hotel in New Delhi left at least 21 people dead, according to preliminary reports from Indian authorities and local media.
The blaze erupted around 8:50 a.m. local time in the basement restaurant of a five-story hotel where roughly 40 guests were staying, broadcaster NDTV reported.
Emergency crews, including multiple fire engines, were dispatched to the scene shortly after authorities received reports of the fire. Officials said many of the hotel’s guests were asleep when the fire broke out, complicating evacuation efforts as smoke quickly spread through the building.
Rescue teams managed to evacuate numerous people from the property, though authorities confirmed that at least 21 victims died in the incident. The total number of injuries has not yet been officially announced.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims’ families in a statement posted on X, saying he was saddened by the tragedy.
Fatal fires remain a recurring safety concern in India, where questions are frequently raised about compliance with fire regulations and emergency preparedness in hotels, restaurants and other crowded commercial buildings.
